Most Chinese eunuchs were castrated as adults, but eunuchs castrated before the age of 10 yr were considered 'thoroughly pure' and were prized as personal servants. All eunuchs received a regular stipend as well as room and board. Most lived in the palaces until they were released from service in old age.
